How do I choose the best financial advisor to work with?

Nothing says “I am a real grownup in charge of my financial destiny” quite as clearly as having a financial advisor. The right advisor can help you articulate your financial needs and goals then work with you to craft a plan to get there. But if you don’t know a lot about personal finance, how do you find the right advisor?
First, cut yourself some slack. This isn’t rocket science. It’s all about you and your needs, so think about what you want from a financial advisor. If you’re new to personal financial planning, you probably want an advisor who will take the time to work with you. An agent with an impersonal, I-can-give-you-15-minutes-two-weeks-from-next-Thursday approach might not be the best choice. Instead, look for an agent who will listen to you, ask about your level of financial experience, and make recommendations based on your investment time horizon and personal risk tolerance.
Find out up front if your advisor is a Fiduciary or Non-Fiduciary. This is an important distinction because it will determine the fee structure and types of investment recommendations the advisor can legally offer you:
  • A fiduciary advisor is required by law to act objectively and manage assets with the client’s best interests in mind. They do not earn commissions or trading fees on any investment recommendations. Fiduciaries must be fee-only or fee-based.
  • Non-fiduciary advisors can be compensated either through sales commissions (from the financial products) or fees (paid by you, the customer). They are required to recommend financial products that they reasonably believe will benefit you.
Be wary of financial advisors who say that their services will never cost you anything or who are ready to offer you investment ideas as soon as they meet you! Managed portfolios or pre-packaged fund offerings typically carry high fees. This means that the advisor and/or the fund manager pay themselves first before they start investing for you.
How do you know if a potential advisor is a fiduciary? Start by asking how they are paid. A fiduciary advisor must have a fee-based or fee only compensation structure. You can also ask about licensing. An agent with a Series 7, 24, or 63 license does not always act as a fiduciary. Another option is to read the disclosures on a financial advisor’s website.
At RINO INVEST, we are proud to act as fiduciaries for our clients. We commit to providing financial education and one-on-one support for you. We value relationships, not transactions, because we know that it takes time to build wealth. If this approach appeals to you, please reach out. We’re here for you!
